Mockups in Figma
BACKGROUND: My team started our project with a discussion about health literacy. These days, younger adults aged 18-30 are exposed to a near constant stream of information online.
Our concern was about misinformation, and the very real possibility that in a formative stage of their lives, young adults are forming their perspectives and habits based on content that rarely gets fact-checked.
There are influencers getting paid to market all kinds of supplements, and diets that are based more on trends than sound medical advice
Our intention with Momentum was to empower young adults in Edmonton through reliable education, fitness, and community.

CHALLENGE: My service design class partnered with a representative from Edmonton’s local government. She shared that they are struggling to get memberships at their small and medium sized leisure centres. Resources at the larger centres are somewhat strained, and they were trying to promote the viability of smaller centres to local communities.

SOLUTION: Our solution was Momentum — a novel group fitness and wellness program that runs twice a week at the Londonderry centre. Each week would feature 2 of the 4 class types. Every class is beginner-friendly and community-oriented.

RESEARCH: My team visited the Londonderry leisure centre to speak with local residents and get a sense of the community. We charted key elements of the user experience journey with an ecosystem map, looking at all the elements that make up the services offered by the city’s leisure centres. This includes physical and digital resources, touchpoints, and all the actors that play a part in delivering services.
Our research led us to the undervalued experience of group fitness, especially for our community partner’s target audience of adults under the age of 30.
For the design phase of our project, we layered in new touchpoints — like extra community outreach, a newsletter, and additional access points for “value members”.
It doesn’t require much new tech or infrastructure— just a new approach to making wellness more accessible.
