ETS On the Go

App Design

Prototyped in Figma

BACKGROUND: The project’s scope was to develop an official transit app for the Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) to replace third-party options, enhancing convenience, promoting public transit use, and encouraging sustainable living. With a strong emphasis on functionality and intuitive design, the app seeks to optimize the user experience while ensuring accessibility for all users.

CHALLENGE: At the time of project discovery, the city of Edmonton recommended its citizens to use third-party transit apps to access relevant information about schedules and trip planning. These third-parties relied on crowd-sourcing bus locations, they did not have access to the live tracking data. Further, its implementation of the ARC card payment program, added yet another website for users to navigate while on the move.

SOLUTION: Our design process involved thorough research and continuous feedback integration, striving to deliver a robust solution that meets the diverse needs of Edmonton’s transit users and contributes to a more efficient and sustainable urban mobility system. Motivated by our passion for city planning and the belief in efficient, accessible, and sustainable public transportation, my team aimed to create an app that improves the transit experience for Edmontonians.

RESEARCH: My team conducted a variety of research methods to inform and enrich our app design. We hosted interviews, concept testing, card sorts, and storyboard exercises with existing transit users to gauge what they have come to expect from transit apps, and what they wish they could see.
